Concerning the Removal of Khmer Language from Hospital Signage in Thailand

We express our deepest concern and strongest condemnation regarding the reported removal of Khmer language signs from a hospital in Thailand. Such an act is not only deeply offensive to the Cambodian people but also represents a clear violation of basic human rights, cultural respect, and international norms of peaceful coexistence.

Language is not merely a tool of communication—it is the soul of a nation and a reflection of its identity and dignity. The deliberate removal of the Khmer language, especially in a healthcare setting where clear communication can save lives, is both irresponsible and inhumane. It sends a disturbing message of exclusion and disrespect toward ethnic Khmer communities and Cambodian nationals residing in or near the border.

We view this act as a dangerous provocation that risks inflaming tensions between the peoples of Cambodia and Thailand at a time when cooperation and dialogue are urgently needed to de-escalate the ongoing conflict. Such behavior is not only unacceptable—it directly contradicts the principles of humanitarianism, ASEAN unity, and international law.

We call on the Thai government and responsible authorities to:

  1. Immediately investigate the incident and identify those responsible.

  2. Publicly condemn this action and reaffirm respect for cultural and linguistic diversity.

  3. Restore all removed signage and implement measures to prevent such discriminatory actions in the future.

We urge the international community, human rights organizations, and ASEAN member states to take notice of this unacceptable behavior and to call for respect, justice, and the protection of cultural rights for all people in the region.

Cambodia will continue to stand for peace, dignity, and mutual respect—and we will never remain silent in the face of cultural aggression or injustice.
